TU – emotional film

After watching Tongues Untied I was lost of words. It never really occurred to me how black queers do go through more struggle. When one is stuck in their mindset, and focus’ on themselves, it is difficult to look at the bigger picture what others have to go through. Watching this film made me feel so grateful. I believe that everyone goes through a time in their life where they feel like they don’t belong, but I don’t think I have ever experienced anything that extreme, and I couldn’t imagine doing so. After taking a few WGSS classes, it really has opened my mind, but nothing like this film. Not only did they feel like outcasts for being queer, they also felt like an outcast for being black since majority of the queer community is white. I just think it is terrible, absolutely terrible. The names they were called were HORRIBLE! No one should ever have to hear such fowl language that is directed towards them. I honestly just felt terrible for them and wished I could switch roles for them so they could have it easy.

I always say a kiss on the hand might feel very good, but a diamond tiara lasts forever.

It’s the year 2013 and woman and men still admire the sassy and unforgettable Marilyn Monroe. Although I’m only 20 years old and never got to experience Marilyn during her life time, her character in Gentleman Prefer Blondes is exactly how I imagined Marilyn to be in her real life; classy, sassy, and a bit smart-assy. I absolutely loved what this movie had to offer. It showed the great relationship between Dorthy and Lorelei, which I am one to believe men come and go but your bestfriend is always there.

Before watching this film, I just expected that these two main characters would have some sort of sexual relationship with one another but while watching this, I actually just felt the connection that they were really close to one another and did truly love each other, but still preferred men. I liked this aspect because many people would probably assume that my best friend and I are lesbians and in a relationship with one another but that’s not the case. At the end of the day, we would take a bullet for each other, yes, but she has a boyfriend as do I. Our relationship may not be normal, or maybe it is but it was so easy for me to connect with Dorthy and Lorelei and understand what they were trying to say.

The other thing I liked was the bold personalities  from both Lorelei and Dorthy. Women back in that era was viewed differently then they are now. Back then, they were more viewed as an accessory or less equal. Luckily, quite a bit has changed in 60 years. Although the girls came off ditzy, they were quite mischievous and manipulative. They knew what they want, and they knew how to get it. I loved this aspect because it did put them in the position of power.
